Mick Philpott, now 69, is said to be seeking legal advice ahead of becoming eligible for parole in May 2027 — more than a decade after the Derby fire that claimed the lives of six children aged between five and 13. The blaze was deliberately started in 2012 as part of a failed plot involving Philpott, his then-wife Mairead and their friend Paul Mosley. Prosecutors said the plan was intended to frame Philpott’s former partner and allow him to appear as the heroic father who rescued the children, but the flames spread too quickly for the scheme to work. Philpott was convicted of manslaughter and described by the sentencing judge as the “driving force” behind the plot. Reports now claim he believes he has been rehabilitated in prison, although any release would require the Parole Board to decide whether he could be safely managed in the community. The possibility of his return to freedom has renewed anger over the scale of the tragedy — and raised difficult questions about whether any prison term could ever feel sufficient after six young lives were lost.
