After years of being tied to the intense world of Outlander, Charles Vandervaart is stepping into something completely different — and fans are already sensing this could be a major turning point for him. His new project, Growing Up Gorman, alongside Emma Kenney, might sound lighter on the surface: teenage dreams, music, messy relationships, and trying to figure out where you belong. But underneath that coming-of-age setup, there are hints of something more emotionally complicated simmering beneath it all. The kind of story where awkward truths and quiet heartbreak sneak up on you when you least expect it 👀 And here’s the detail catching fans off guard: insiders say Charles’ character may be hiding a side of himself that completely changes the emotional direction of the story midway through. If true, this won’t just be a fun genre switch — it could be the role that finally separates him from the shadow of William Ransom once and for all. Sometimes the most interesting transformation begins when an actor walks away from the role everyone thought defined them.

Outlander’s William Ransom lands new project away from Starz drama with Shameless star

Outlander’s William Ransom star already has another series in the pipeline as the time travel drama is preparing to conclude.

The Outlander actor behind Jamie Fraser’s son will soon be starring opposite a star of hit sitcom Shameless.

William Ransom (played by Charles Vandervaart) was brought into the fold as Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) illegitimate son with Geneva Dunsany (Hannah James) in season five, part one.

Jamie was first introduced to his son as a youngster in series four, who had been raised by his legal guardian Lord John Grey (David Berry), the husband of Geneva’s sister, after she died in childbirth.

Fast-forward to the later series and William is all grown-up and a soldier of the British Army but he is yet to find out the truth regarding his parentage.

This is expected to come out in the next lot of episodes but while fans await the show’s return, Vandervaart has been busy working on another project.

The William Ransom actor is going to be starring in a comedy-drama called Growing Up Gorman, according to his IMDb page.

The series, which is currently in pre-production, is about Derek Gorman who “thinks he has a simple plan to get popular…

“To win the battle of the bands competition and Patricia O’Connell’s heart. But sometimes, life doesn’t go as expected.”

No details have been released regarding who Vandevraart will play, only that The Black Phone star Brady Hepner will be behind the titular character.

Vandervaart, however, is also going to be working alongside Shameless actress Emma Kenney.

Not only was she behind Deborah “Debbie” Gallagher in the Showtime comedy-drama for a decade, she went on to play Harris Conner-Healy in season 10 of Roseanne as well as its spin-off The Conners.

Some of her other roles have been in Robert The Bruce, Back To Lyla and Murder At Yellowstone City, having kickstarted her career in 2008.

But before Growing Up Gorman reaches the small screen, Vandervaart will continue to star as the iconic Jamie Fraser’s son in Outlander.
