Idris Elba knighted by King Charles for anti-knife crime work as he leads stars honoured at Windsor Castle
IDRIS Elba is among a host of celebrities who received honours at Windsor Castle today.
The Luther star was awarded a knighthood in the prestigious New Years Honours for his services to young people.
Frontrunner for the glittering role of James Bond, Idris has been championed for his community empowerment and devotion to educational projects.
He founded the Elba Hope Foundation in 2022, which promotes grassroots action and sustainable development.
The star is no stranger to royal accolades, having received a grant from the Prince’s Trust (now King’s Trust) at the age of 18 to attend the National Youth Music Theatre.
Among the other 67 stars to receive recognition from King Charles was ice-skating champion Sir Christopher Dean, who joked with the King that he’d “recommend” retirement.
“It’s a wonderful day, and to be here in this setting – it’s amazing to be in Windsor Castle, and all the traditional elements as well,” he added.
He was honoured alongside his partner Dame Jayne Torvill.
The elegant duo made history when they took home gold at the 1984 Winter Olympics for their ‘Bolero’ performance.
They later became the faces of the much-loved celebrity show, Dancing On Ice, from which they have since stepped down.
Jayne received her damehood before her partner, making it a “bit of an awkward situation” for both of them – only to find out Christopher’s had been misdirected in the post.
“I got it about two weeks later,” he laughed.
Comedian Dame Meera Syal, known for her starring role in The Kumars at No 42, also received recognition today, for her contribution to literature, drama and charity.
Chuckle Brothers legend Paul Elliot received an MBE, in recognition of his charity work.
