VICE President JD Vance and his wife second lady Usha Vance have welcomed the birth of their baby boy.

Usha, 40, gave birth to the couple’s fourth child early on Sunday, the first baby born to a sitting vice president in more than 150 years.

The vice president, 41, confirmed the news in a statement where he also revealed the newborn’s name: Alec Neel Vance.

“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning,” it read.

“Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.

“The incredible military doctors and staff members of Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing.

“We are deeply thankful for all they have done for our family.”

Vance and Usha already had three children together: Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5, and Mirabel, 4.

Usha has now made history after becoming the first second lady to give birth while serving in the White House in over a century and a half.

The last time a sitting vice president had a child in office was in the 1800s.

Only one first lady has given birth and raised a newborn while serving in the White House – Frances Cleveland, the wife of former President Grover Cleveland, in 1893.

Former First Lady Jackie Kennedy, the wife of former President John F. Kennedy, also gave birth while in the White House to their son, Patrick Kennedy, who tragically died two days after his birth.

Usha, 40, joined Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt as the second woman in the Trump administration to welcome a child while serving for the 47th president.

Leavitt, 28, announced last December that she and her husband, Nicholas Riccio, 60, were expecting their second child.

Leavitt and Riccio, who share a son, Niko, welcomed their daughter in May, which the press secretary already returning to her role by early July.

White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller’s wife, Katie, also gave birth to their fourth child in May.

Vice President Vance has previously been an advocate for Americans having more children.

He repeatedly expressed alarm about declining birth rates when he launched his political career with a senate run in Ohio in 2021.

“I want more babies in the United States of America,” he repeated at a March for Life anti-abortion rally in Washington DC in 2025.

The second couple has said that the death of their friend, activist Charlie Kirk, also played an influence on their decision to have another child.

Kirk’s wife Erika reportedly told them she wished she’d have more children with her husband before his assassination last September.

“It was very powerful, what (Erika) said about her own family, and certainly very moving to both of us. I think I had already started to open my mind to the possibility,” Usha said in an interview with CBS in June.

“I wouldn’t say that this was, for me in any way, the decisive factor. But it came in the middle of a conversation that we were already having.”

Usha had continued to travel on official trips with her husband until the final weeks of her pregnancy.

She also continued to film her YouTube show “Storytime with the Second Lady” with appearances from Donald Trump and JD in the final weeks.

Her outfit choice on the show became the center of a social media storm, however, when the New York Times published a fashion critique accusing Usha of calling attention to her bump with her dresses.

The article said Usha, Leavitt and Miller used their fashion choices as “an image of idealized womanhood that gives literal shape to the pronatalist movement.”

Usha hit back in an X post accusing the Times of politicizing an Old Navy dress.

“Now that we know the political significance of my $8.75 coral maternity dress from Old Navy, can’t wait to hear what the New York Times has to say about my elastic-waistband pants and compression socks!” she wrote.

“In the meantime, enjoy my pregnancy fashion (or lack thereof) and a good story with your kids on Storytime with the Second Lady.”

“She bought a $50 dress for $8.75. America: meet your next director of the federal budget!” added JD after Usha also shared a receipt of the purchase.
