The exact spot of the tragedy was the Roncal dam – a beloved picnicking spot with trees and clear blue waters at the heart of the Pyrenees.

Paramedics and an air ambulance raced to the dam after the alarm was raised at 4:39pm today.

They worked for over an hour to revive the family – but sadly all three were confirmed dead at the scene.

The Civil Guard are treating the deaths as accidental but have launched a probe to confirm there were no suspicious circumstances.

The identity of the mother and her children, from Roncal Valley, has not yet been made public.

Following the tragedy, Roncal City Council has declared three days of official mourning.

In a statement, they said: “Roncal Town Council wishes to express, on behalf of the entire town, its deep sorrow for the incident, its solidarity with the families and friends of the deceased, and its willingness to assist the affected families with any necessary procedures.”

It comes just one day after two identical twin boys were found dead in Catalonia.

The brothers, aged 11, had left home to play football – but when they did not return for dinner, their parents raised the alarm.

Two police forces mobilised in a major search party for the missing children.

Cops searched through the night and into the morning of July 14 when they made a tragic discovery.

The clothes of the twins were found on the bank of the river Ter at 11am, followed by the bodies of the twins, one at 1pm and the other at 2pm.

Police believe the brothers drowned after going into the river to cool off after their match.

The parents of the twins have been offered psychological support following their devastating loss.

And last month, the mum and grandmother of a five-year-old boy drowned after jumping into a river to save the child’s life.

The boy was paddleboarding near a dam on a family day out in a Spanish holiday hotspot when a powerful current began to sweep him away.

His 32-year-old mum reportedly leapt into the water to try and rescue the boy, followed by his 52-year-old granny.

Fishermen later found the child clinging on to a tree trunk.
