Following the debut of Netflix’s docuseries Death of the Pastor’s Wife, online discussion surrounding the April 2024 death of 30-year-old South Carolina worship leader Mica Miller has reignited. Central to internet speculation are two crime-scene details documented by law enforcement: her body being discovered approximately 100 feet away from the handgun, and the presence of two spent bullet casings at the scene.
Addressing these persistent talking points, television host and former crime scene investigator Alina Burroughs explained why neither piece of physical evidence contradicts the official ruling of suicide.
The Two Bullet Casings: Explaining the ‘Test Shot’
Online commentators have frequently pointed to the discovery of two discharged shell casings alongside an unspent live round as potential indicators of foul play. Burroughs noted that this pattern is often observed in self-inflicted shootings involving individuals with minimal firearms training:

Gauging Recoil and Noise: “So what we see a lot of times with people who are either less familiar with firearms or maybe nervous is they do a test shot… so that they can kind of know what to expect—like what is it going to sound like? How is it going to feel in my hand? How loud is it going to be?” Burroughs explained.

Fitting the Scene: Burroughs emphasized that finding multiple casings alongside a live round aligns directly with an inexperienced shooter working through hesitation and the mechanical operation of a newly purchased weapon.
The 100-Foot Distance: The Physics of Water Currents
Mica took her own life at Lumber River State Park in Robeson County, North Carolina, shortly after calling 911 to request that dispatchers locate her body for her family. Her body was subsequently located by a kayaker in the water, roughly 100 feet downstream from where the gun lay near the shoreline.
Burroughs clarified that the separation between body and weapon would only suggest third-party staging if the death had taken place on dry land:

River Dynamics: “If this were on land it would be suspicious [that her body was 100 feet away], but the difference here is that we have a body of water,” Burroughs noted.

Rapid Displacement: A single cubic foot of water weighs around 62 pounds; moving at a moderate flow of four miles per hour, it exerts roughly 66 pounds of force per cubic foot. Given the natural buoyancy of a human body, a steady river current can displace an individual 100 feet in just seconds until snagged by rocks, branches, or riverbanks.
Investigative Findings Remain Intact
While Miller’s family has detailed severe allegations of coercive control, emotional torment, and financial abuse by her estranged husband, Solid Rock Church pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller, North Carolina authorities closed the case after concluding that her death was caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
JP Miller was confirmed by investigators to have been outside North Carolina at the time of her death and has never been charged in connection with the suicide. However, he remains under federal indictment on separate charges of cyberstalking Mica and providing false statements to federal agents.
