Stephen Colbert is sporting a gray goatee and plenty of enthusiasm for his Late Show colleagues at the 2026 Emmy Awards.

Colbert, wearing the new-look facial hair, said on PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly‘s red carpet show ahead of the 78th Emmys on Monday, Sept. 14, that he just flew to Los Angeles in order to attend the ceremony from New Zealand, where he is currently working on a new Lord of the Rings movie that he is writing.

“I woke up yesterday in New Zealand — which, yesterday in New Zealand is tomorrow for us. I left yesterday-tomorrow, so I don’t know how many days today has been,” Colbert, 62, quips. “I’m here to celebrate all my staff! They won six Emmys last weekend at the Creative Arts. My writers, my digital team, cameraman, director, lighting, technical direction. It was just – I’m so proud of them.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS came to an end with its final episode on May 21, capping Colbert’s 11 years hosting the late-night talk show. The series was a regular at the Emmy Awards each year and is nominated one final time for Outstanding Variety Series alongside The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Saturday Night Live. As Colbert referenced on the carpet, the series already won six awards at the Creative Arts Emmys, which were held on Sept. 5 and 6.

“It’s been great,” Colbert says of reuniting with the staff from his show. “Last night when I got in, we had a party with about 40 people that I have not seen in four months, and those are people that I saw every day for 21 years. So, yeah, it’s been great.”

Colbert has won 12 Emmys over the years, dating back to his time with The Daily Show in the early 2000s. He has been nominated 51 times total. “The thing is that there’s probably a thousand people in that room that I’ve interviewed over the last 21 years, you know what I mean?” he says of the support his series received annually from Emmy Awards attendees and fellow nominees. “I’m so grateful to all those people for ever coming on the show.”

Colbert announced that CBS decided to cancel The Late Show in May 2026 all the way back in July 2025. He signed off the franchise’s final episode on May 21 by singing The Beatles’ “Hello, Goodbye,” with Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello and Jon Batiste. He shares that he and his staff “tried to run pretty hard through the tape at the end of the show,” when discussing how he has decompressed from the day-to-day grind of hosting the late-night series.

“I’m not going to say I didn’t twitch a little bit for the first week, but we had stuff to do. We had to pack out of the theater,” Colbert says. “Somebody else is coming in, or they’re not. I don’t know what’s going on there. I had to go to my brother’s wedding, which was fun. That’s a proper comedown. I went to go do something truly important, see my brother get married, so that was lovely.”
