Dark Winds season 4 ended with a shocking twist.
The AMC thriller series, which is based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee book series, came to a dramatic conclusion with its finale episode on April 5. Once again, the fourth season featured the Navajo Tribal Police trio of Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) working together on a new case.
They travel to 1970s Los Angeles to investigate the disappearance of a missing Navajo teenager, Billie Tsosie (Isabel DeRoy-Olson). They quickly discover that her disappearance appears to be linked to the dangerous mob crime boss Dominic McNair (Titus Welliver).
However, as the series unravels, Joe finds himself in severe danger when he’s kidnapped by a contract killer. Meanwhile, Jim is going through a spiritual journey with the help of his colleagues.
Just when the group seems to have reunited to support Jim and come to a peaceful ending, everything gets completely upended with a shocking murder in the final moments. Luckily for viewers, Dark Winds has already been renewed for season 5.
Here’s everything to know about how Dark Winds season 4 ended.
Who was murdered?

In a shocking turn of events, the Navajo Tribal Police discover that Joe’s longtime friend and the former Scarborough County Sheriff, Gordo Sena (A Martinez), was murdered. Joe is shown looking concerned on the phone at the police headquarters when Bernadette notices his shock.
“Gordo Sena was murdered last night,” Joe tells her in the episode’s final moments.
Earlier on in the episode, Joe met up with Gordo, because he was struggling to decide whether or not he should retire. Gordo gave words of advice and admitted that he felt like he retired too quickly and had taken it upon himself to re-investigate some of his unsolved cases from the past.
Unfortunately, Gordo was killed later that night, and there aren’t any clear suspects by the end of the episode, leaving the season on a major cliffhanger.
Gordo’s wife, Barbara (Linda Hamilton), is struggling with dementia and may not be able to help catch his killer even if she saw something.
Did Joe and Billie escape their abductor?

In the beginning of the episode, Joe and Billie get abducted by Irene Vaggan (Franka Potente), a German contract killer who murders witnesses on behalf of Dominic while he’s in prison. However, as she gets closer to the case, she starts to develop an obsession and fascination with Joe.
Although Dominic ordered Irene to kill Billie and Joe, she decides to kidnap them in hopes of creating a “family” dynamic with Joe as her husband and Billie as their daughter. She takes them to a bunker and ties them down to chairs to simulate a dinner table scene.
Although Joe tries to talk clearly to her and tells her that he knows what she’s done and how she’s connected to Dominic, Irene is only concerned about having their “first meal together as a family.” She asks Billie to say a prayer in her native language, but Billie only upsets her with her unkind words, so she knocks them out with gas instead.
When Joe wakes up, he collects gauze, a charcoal filter and his bedsheets to create a gas mask. He then pretends to be unconscious, attacks Irene, gets the keys to the bunker and wakes up Billie.
The two try to run off, but Irene catches up and captures Billie. She threatens to shoot her, so Joe turns himself over. However, he doesn’t give up. The next morning, Joe convinces Irene that he has bought into her plan to be a family and convinces her to say a prayer outside the bunker.
While outside, he finds a lighter and lights up a nearby area of brush. He and Billie run, while Irene gets set on fire. She ends up surviving and starts to shoot at them, but Joe and Billie successfully escape and later arrest her.
What happened to Dominic McNair?

Dominic is no ordinary villain in Dark Winds. Unlike past anti-heroes in the show, Dominic is locked up in prison awaiting murder charges. Despite being incarcerated, he’s still running his crime ring and paying people to murder witnesses.
After Joe escapes, he visits Dominic, who appears to be shocked that he’s alive. Dominic continues to threaten Joe and tells him that he’ll walk away free, but Joe mocks Dominic for already trying to have him killed and failing.
Joe leaves Dominic alone in his cell, and the visit seems to have had some sort of impact on Dominic. However, it’s unclear if he will completely give up on exploiting the Navajo or if he’ll only double down.

Throughout season 4, Joe is battling with whether or not he should retire, and by the end of the season, it seems like he may be leaning toward calling it quits.
His wife, Emma (Deanna Allison) also informs him that she’s moving off the reservation to L.A., and he tells her that he’s going to retire in hopes of being a better man for both of them.
At the same time, Jim is considering joining the L.A. branch of the FBI, while Bernadette’s future with the Navajo Police remains uncertain until Joe figures out what he wants to do. However, before Joe has a chance to give up his badge for good and the others make a decision, he hears about his good friend Gordo’s grizzly murder.
The trio may have to pause their future career plans to solve Gordo’s murder and get to the bottom of the crime in season 5.
