Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been touring Australia this week, but attention has now turned to the Duchess as the visit progresses. The couple have maintained a hectic schedule throughout their travels thus far, though some believe Meghan Markle may have committed a “blunder” during recent appearances.

During an engagement alongside Prince Harry, her most recent choice has been labelled “hypocritical” by certain observers, given previous remarks she has made regarding fashion while working within the Royal family. Following her selection of a particular ensemble, social media users were swift to highlight something they deemed rather significant on X.

This follows earlier speculation about their relationship this week. Previously, it was reported that Prince Harry exhibited a revealing gesture that spoke volumes about their marriage.

Writing on X, one person said: “Didn’t Meghan Markle state that ‘being required to wear pantyhose (tights) as a Royal felt inauthentic and not very herself’. She said she hadn’t worn them since the 1980s and described the rule as a ‘silly example’ of the limitations she felt on her personal expression and comfort. So what’s that on her legs?”

Other observers picked up on this as well, with another writing: “Who remembers what Meghan Markle said about wearing pantyhose?”

To this, someone else replied: “My first thought when I saw this pic. Her words are coming back to bite her!”

Another wrote: “Yes, I immediately thought of that as soon as I saw her in this outfit. Such a hypocrite.” One more also noted: “I was just thinking that! Hypocrite.”

However, some felt the criticism was excessive, arguing that her earlier remarks had been far more specific. One social media user pointed out: “But those were nude hose not black hose, just like that was Meghan Duchess of Sussex and this is Meg. Totally different things.”

Another added: “In a 2025 interview, Meghan Markle stated that being required to wear nude pantyhose as a working Royal felt ‘inauthentic’ and ‘not very myself’.

“Do they look nude to you? You are really scraping the barrel now!”

For those unfamiliar with the background to these remarks, Meghan previously spoke about feeling “inauthentic” wearing pantyhose in an earlier interview. She sat down for an in-depth conversation with Bloomberg’s The Circuit With Emily Chang to coincide with the launch of the second series of her Netflix lifestyle programme.

On that occasion, she revealed she “had to wear nude pantyhose all the time” as a working member of the Royal family, describing the experience as feeling “a little bit inauthentic.” She further alleged that she “couldn’t be as vocal” during that period, adding that she was also unable to dress in the manner she wished.

This explains why observers have been puzzled by her choice to wear tights, despite the fact that the pair she recently donned were black. This comes as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s tour reaches day three following Harry’s solo engagements at a war memorial and mental health charity while Meghan made a television appearance.

As the couple resume joint outings, they have thus far received enthusiastic receptions from crowds throughout Melbourne as their visit entered its third day. The pair participated in an Aboriginal walk in Melbourne along the Yarra river, marking their most public appearance to date.

It has been reported that one boy told Meghan he loved Suits, the television programme in which she starred as an actress. Meanwhile, Harry stepped aside so the admirer could capture a photograph with his wife.

They have been photographed taking selfies with members of the public, with scenes reportedly becoming chaotic as Harry was compelled to step in to protect the couple from journalists. Notwithstanding the purported “blunder” being emphasised, crowds continue to gather to catch a glimpse of them as their tour progresses.
