🇵🇭 ALEX EALA’S ASIAN GAMES DOUBLES PARTNER REVEALS WHAT IT’S REALLY LIKE TO SHARE THE COURT WITH HER — AND ONE THING EALA DOES DURING MATCHES STOOD OUT IMMEDIATELY. Playing alongside one of the Philippines’ biggest sporting stars could easily bring its own pressure, especially with expectations surrounding Eala at the Asian Games. Yet her doubles partner has now offered a very different perspective from inside the partnership. Rather than focusing simply on Eala’s ranking or shot-making, she highlighted something that happens between points and during difficult moments — offering a revealing glimpse of the teammate Eala becomes once a match begins.

Alex Eala and Shaira Rivera are playing together for the first time at the Asian Games.

Eala has risked receiving a fine from the WTA Tour after skipping the China Open to compete in both singles and doubles at the Asian Games this year.

The Filipina has made a positive start in both events, with Eala and Rivera winning their opening doubles match against Hong Kong’s Ching Laam Lai and Kallista Liu, who they beat 6-1, 6-3.

Although Rivera is playing alongside Eala, she does not have a WTA ranking and is primarily an American college player, and she has now revealed how it felt to play alongside one of the biggest stars in tennis right now.

Alex Eala had Shaira Rivera nervous before their first match at the Asian Games

Following their opening victory together at the Asian Games, Rivera and Eala spoke to media in Nagoya, Japan, where the event is being held.

This is where Rivera revealed how nervous she had felt playing alongside Eala for the first time, but she explained how she became more relaxed as the match went on.

“I mean, it’s my first time partnering with Alex,” said Rivera. “Of course, Alex Eala. My gosh. At first, I felt kind of nervous because my partner is Alex Eala. She has so much more experience. Number 18 in the world.

“And then, we were just enjoying ourselves. There were times when we sang a little bit, and then suddenly, ‘Come on, let’s go. We need to finish this.’ We were just like that.”

Eala also spoke about teaming up with Rivera, who she called a friend, as well as commenting on the conditions at the Asian Games.

“How is our chemistry? I think it’s good,” said Eala. “It’s happy, happy on the court, and it’s always more fun when you’re on the court with a friend.

“I’m going to get a stretch and, yeah, I think today I didn’t drink much water because it wasn’t very hot. But yeah, rest early. I mean sleep early and then ready to fight tomorrow.

“That’s also one of the reasons why I came to the Asian Games, so I could be with the team again and I’m able to feel that sense of camaraderie.”

Eala and Rivera are now into the second round, and they will hope to continue their bid for an Asian Games medal for the Philippines as they now take on the Chinese pairing of Xinyu Jiang and Zhaoxuan Yang.
