Alex Eala defeated Joanna Garland, 7-5, 6-0, in the 2026 Asian Games quarter-finals.
The Filipina has made a strong start to her Asian Games campaign. Eala defeated Patcharin Cheapchandej 6-1, 6-0 in her opening singles match and then won her first-round doubles match in straight sets.
Returning to singles action, Eala met Garland in the quarter-finals. The Chinese Taipei star troubled Eala early on and even threatened to take the first set before the top seed secured the crucial break to lead 7-5. Eala then pushed ahead, winning the second set without dropping a game to book her place in the Asian Games semi-finals.
She was understandably delighted with the win and her performance, playing her first match of the tournament on Centre Court after the earlier matches were moved indoors because of the rain. In her on-court interview, Eala delivered her verdict on the match.
Alex Eala says there are no easy matches at the Asian Games after ‘tough’ quarter-final win vs Joanna Garland
“I’m super happy to be here in Nagoya, and representing the Philippines, I’m very happy! I think it’s pretty strong [her fanbase in Japan]. To compete in the Asian Games is especially; it’s a different vibe than the tournaments I normally have. I think the support that each country brings to their delegation is amazing, and the Philippines, I give my heart out to them,” said Eala.
“Right now, I need to focus on doubles, and then hopefully two more matches in singles. But I know that no matches here are easy; my match today was very tough. Joanna [Garland], she’s a great player, a great person, so really happy to come through this match.”
Eala needed to be at her best in the first set to avoid falling behind against Garland, who has impressed recently on the WTA Tour. While Eala lost her opening match at the Singapore Open, Garland advanced through qualifying before defeating Storm Hunter in the first round.
The quarter-finals were Eala’s first real test at the Asian Games, but as she mentioned in her post-match interview, there are no ‘easy’ matches in Aichi-Nagoya. The semi-final line-up is set, and to win gold, Eala will need to defeat two of the top four seeds.

Alex Eala lost to Qinwen Zheng in the 2023 Asian Games semi-finals
Three years ago, Eala met Qinwen Zheng in the Asian Games semi-finals. The Filipina walked onto the court as the underdog against Zheng, who was playing at home in Hangzhou.
Eala was no match for Zheng in the opener, dropping the first set 6-1, but fought hard to level the match, winning the second 7-6 (7-5). Unfortunately for the Filipina, she couldn’t maintain that form in the decider.
Zheng defeated Eala, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3, in the 2023 Asian Games semi-finals. Eala earned a bronze medal for her efforts, while Zheng won gold, beating her countrywoman, Zhu Lin, in the final.
Eala will be determined to go all the way in 2026 and win her first Asian Games gold medal. The world number 18 is now just two wins away from doing just that. However, she will first turn her attention to doubles, where she and Shaira Rivera will play Xinyu Jiang and Zhaoxuan Yang later on Wednesday, September 30.
