Ukrainian tennis star Dayana Yastremska lost her home after a Russian missile hit and destroyed her apartment in Odesa. The 26-year-old posted videos on Saturday showing the terrible damage left behind.

Yastremska said a Russian cruise missile struck the building, wiping out almost everything she owned. Pretty much the only thing left in one piece was a towel from the French Open.

“A Russian missile destroyed our apartment in Odesa. The only thing that survived was a Roland Garros towel. SYMBOLIC,” Yastremska wrote on Instagram, asking tennis officials to truly see the war from Ukraine’s point of view.

Her post focused on how tennis handles player neutrality during the war, giving fans a heartbreaking, up-close look at what her family is going through.

Tennis Fans Show Support For Yastremska

Fans responded to Yastremska’s post and offered their support. Many expressed sympathy after seeing the damage to her apartment.

“So sorry. Cannot imagine what you are going through,” one fan wrote.

“I stand with you and Ukraine, Dayana,” another fan said.

Not every response focused only on Yastremska. One fan argued that politics should stay away from tennis while also expressing concern for people affected by the war.

“Polítics must not be part of tennis,” the fan wrote. “I’m so sorry for the innocent people who dies from both side Ukraine and Russia.”

Yastremska is not the only Ukrainian tennis player who has spoken about the war. Marta Kostyuk has also remained vocal about the situation in Ukraine.

Kostyuk said in May that a missile strike came within 100 meters of her parents’ home in Kyiv. She later criticized the International Olympic Committee after it lifted its ban on Russia.

“I think it’s very, very far from fair play for all the countries involved here, not just for Ukraine. I 100% don’t agree with this decision….., I just want to go out there and hopefully beat every single Russian I play in the Olympics.,” Kostyuk said at Wimbledon.

Yastremska’s post put the war right back in the tennis world’s focus, as Ukrainian players keep reminding everyone how much the conflict is turning their lives upside down.
