EVELYN THOUGHT A HIDDEN CAMERA WOULD PROVE HER DAUGHTER-IN-LAW WAS TOO “UNSTABLE” TO RAISE HER THREE-YEAR-OLD SON—BUT SHE NEVER REALISED THE SAME CAMERA WAS RECORDING WHAT SHE DID BEFORE MAYA STARTED SCREAMING

.The scream reached Daniel Hayes before he reached the kitchen.

He had been halfway down the dark hallway, still carrying the cold anger from an argument in the driveway, when Emma’s voice tore through the house.

“Stop, please!”

Daniel ran.

The bright white kitchen appeared at the end of the hall like a stage under interrogation lights, every cabinet glowing beneath the overhead fixtures and every stainless steel surface throwing back the hard daylight from the window.

Emma was on the floor beside the island in her light gray robe, one arm around five-year-old Noah and the other raised over his head as if her own body could become a roof.

Noah was crying so hard that his small shoulders shook.

Standing over them was Margaret Hayes, Daniel’s mother, dressed in a dark blue blouse and black jacket, her face tight with the kind of fury she usually hid behind perfect manners.

Daniel did not remember crossing the last ten feet.

“What the hell are you doing?!”

Margaret turned just as he slammed his shoulder into her and shoved her away from Emma.

She staggered backward into the stove, striking the edge with her hip.

“Daniel, don’t be ridiculous.”

He grabbed the heavy wooden cutting board from the counter and hurled it down onto the island with such force that the crack echoed through the kitchen.

A thin split appeared along one corner of the old board.

Daniel barely noticed.

The scratches burning across his right cheek and temple seemed to throb with his pulse.

Margaret stared at those scratches for one strange second, and something almost satisfied flickered in her eyes.

Then Daniel lunged forward, caught the collar of her jacket, and forced her back against the lower cabinets.

“Don’t you ever lay a finger on my family!”

Margaret’s fear arrived late, but when it came, it was real.

Her eyes widened.

Her hands trembled.

Still, she forced out a sneer.

“How dare you touch me.”

Daniel leaned closer, breathing hard.

“Try it again.”

Behind him, Emma whispered his name.

The sound pulled him out of the rage more effectively than any threat could have.

He released Margaret and turned.

Emma’s lip was bleeding.

Noah had a red mark around his wrist.

Daniel dropped to his knees.

“Em, what happened?”

Emma looked at Margaret instead of him.

“She came through the back door.”

Margaret straightened her jacket.

“I used my key.”

“The key we told you to return,” Emma said.

“I came for something that belongs to this family.”

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

“What?”

Margaret’s eyes moved toward the cutting board.

It was quick.

Too quick.

But Emma saw it too.

“She was searching the cabinets,” Emma said.

“I asked her to leave.”

Margaret laughed once, without humor.

“You screamed at me.”

“Because you grabbed Noah.”

“I was moving him out of the way.”

Noah buried his face against Emma’s chest.

“Grandma said Mommy was sick.”

The kitchen went silent.

Margaret’s face changed.

Daniel stood slowly.

“What did you say to him?”

Margaret stepped toward the doorway.

“You need to calm down before you make this worse.”

Daniel followed one step.

“You don’t get to say that after what I just walked in on.”

Margaret reached into her purse.

Emma flinched.

Daniel moved between them instantly.

Margaret pulled out her phone instead of a weapon.

The screen was already recording.

“Good,” she said quietly.

Daniel froze.

Margaret lifted the phone higher, framing his scratched face and clenched fists.

“Let everyone see what you are.”

The anger drained from Daniel so fast that cold replaced it.

He suddenly remembered the driveway twenty minutes earlier.

Margaret had appeared beside his truck, frantic and demanding to speak to Emma.

When he refused to let her inside, she had grabbed his face with both hands, scratching him as he pulled away.

At the time, he had thought she was losing control.

Now he understood that she had wanted the marks there.

“You did this on purpose,” he said.

Margaret smiled.

Emma stared at Daniel’s cheek.

“Those scratches came from her?”

He nodded.

Margaret backed into the hallway.

“I never touched him.”

“I have the driveway camera,” Daniel said.

For the first time, her smile faltered.

Then every phone in the kitchen chimed at once.

Daniel’s screen lit up with a notification from the security system.

CAMERA NETWORK OFFLINE.

REMOTE ADMINISTRATOR ACCESS DETECTED.

He looked toward the small black camera mounted above the pantry door.

Its status light was dark.

Margaret looked at it too.

And smiled again.

“Call the police,” Emma whispered.

Daniel already had his phone in his hand.

Margaret paused at the mouth of the hallway.

“You should call them.”

Her voice was almost calm now.

“Because by the time they get here, they’ll already have my report.”

Daniel felt something turn over in his stomach.

“What report?”

Margaret’s eyes settled on Noah.

May you like

“The one saying your child isn’t safe in this house.”

Then she walked out.
