Iva Jovic spoke glowingly about Alex Eala in the build-up to their recent US Open match, and in the end, it definitely delivered.
It was an enthralling three-set battle that concluded after three hours of torturous but exceptional tennis. This was the future of the sport battling on one of its biggest stages, and although the American may have emerged victorious, it was tennis that really won under the Arthur Ashe Stadium floodlights.
The WTA Tour is in good hands with these two young superstars present, and that’s without even mentioning Coco Gauff, who Jovic will play next.
Speaking in her press conference, the 18-year-old was keen to retain that same complimentary nature of Alexandra Eala despite how crushing the loss must be for her good friend.

She began by discussing the match, and inadvertently turned it into praise about Eala.
Iva Jovic claimed: “For me this means more than a one-and-two win, and especially knowing the level that was played.

“I mean, I was literally looking at the stats right after, because I couldn’t believe what just happened, but we were both in the positive of winners vs unforced errors, so it was a really, really high level. That gives me a lot of confidence to beat someone that’s playing arguably top five tennis right now with the summer that she’s had, so it gives me a lot of confidence, so I think if I can replicate that it’s going to be good.”
Expanding on that claim regarding Eala’s current level, she added: “Honestly, I thought she played well in all the encounters that we faced, but she played an outrageous level tonight. She was serving very good; she was showing a lot more versatility with her returns.
Iva Jovic is ready for the battle with Coco Gauff at the US Open
Jovic, fresh from one youthful battle, will have to summon all her reserves to be ready for her next US Open challenge.
After all, she now faces inarguably the most outstanding young player on the entire WTA Tour in Gauff.
Speaking on-court about this clash, she began by issuing a statement of intent: “I’m going to be more than happy to just bring this fight and this energy, and whatever happens, then I can leave with my head high.
“She’s playing some unbelievable tennis and a really great person, so it’s going to be an amazing match.”
Then, in her post-match press conference, Jovic added: “Facing one of the best in the world in the second week of a Grand Slam is something I’ve always wanted. Obviously, Coco is playing quite well right now.
”The last time I played against her was a bit painful, and I had many opportunities. I hope to learn from that experience and replicate the level I showed here. I think if I can do that, I will definitely have my chances.”
