King Charles would be left in an “awkward position” if he made a public appearance with his estranged grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, a royal commentator has claimed. The children of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have come back into the spotlight after reports claimed the couple would return to the UK this summer for the first time in four years.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not travelled with their children to Britain since the summer of 2020. A royal commentator has now claimed that while the King would love to reconcile with his two American grandchildren, such a scenario could spark backlash. Lee Cohen, a US-based columnist/royal and foreign policy commentator, told the Spectator: “Highlighting the Sussex children’s involvement after years of limited contact with their British relatives comes at a pointed time.

“It leaves King Charles in an awkward position. He has kept some private contact with Harry despite his own health battles.”

Mr Cohen warned: “A public family appearance risks looking like a concession after years of sniping from the Sussex side.”

Harry previously expressed his hopes of bringing his children from the US, but had insisted it was too dangerous amid his legal fight over his UK security.

But the duke has reportedly been assured that adequate security provisions will be in place for the trip.

It is not yet known whether the King will meet his youngest grandchildren during their stay.

The trip comes after Harry reunited with Charles, who is still undergoing treatment for cancer, last September, for the first time in 19 months.
