Fans just got a major update on the future of one of the hottest action thrillers of the year. Elite Force might even be what finally breaks new ground for an entire corner of Netflix originals.

Speaking to Télé Loisirs, Elite Force (or GIGN in the original French) star Tomer Sisley confirmed that Season 2 of the hit French action thriller is “being written.” While Netflix has yet to greenlight another season of the recently released series, Elite Force has only been on the platform for less than two weeks at this point, which is less time than the streaming giant typically allows before announcing a release has been renewed.

Why Another Season of Elite Force Would Be a Momentous Occasion

“The writers are currently working on this second season,” Sisley continued. “I think it’s no secret to you, but Netflix usually gives the green light for a sequel about a month after a series is released. So, for now, we’ll see. But I can tell you that the production team is working hard on it and the writers are working hard for an interesting second season.”

After its Netflix premiere, Elite Force effectively became an overnight global sensation. The series revolves around the members of the efforts and members of the French Groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale (GIGN), a literal elite force tasked with frequently dangerous and highly sensitive missions involving counterterrorism and surveillance.

Considering other Netflix series such as The Boroughs have risen to the top of the charts and garnered widespread acclaim only to be shuttered after a single season, fans are understandably hesitant to think that Elite Force will get a Season 2 order. That being said, Elite Force would be just the third French Netflix original to be greenlit for a second season after Blood Coast and Lupin, which may further prove that audiences are indeed interested in longer-form narratives instead of one-off streaming shows.

However, an Elite Force renewal will further try to deny the Season 2 curse, and allow Netflix an opportunity to invest in French local productions, as per the current directives that Netflix and Prime Video are trying to fight.

Netflix’s Elite Force Is a Massive Success for So Many Good Reasons

Elite Force offers viewers a truly tense, pulse-pounding story featuring an all-star ensemble cast led by Tomer Sisley’s David Berger, a decorated commander within the GIGN. Elite Force also stars Tristan Zanchi as Max, a new recruit who believes David may have had a role to play in his father’s mysterious demise.

When the GIGN becomes the target of a brazen attack by an enigmatic terrorist cell, the entire organization is forced to race against time to hunt down their assailants before anyone else can come to harm. All the while, Max is busy digging into the circumstances of his father’s death and whether his superior officer was responsible for the loss of his family.

Since the series was released, Elite Force has been met with largely favorable if somewhat divisive responses from both viewers and critics. As of the time of writing, Elite Force boasts a 6.3/10 approval rating via IMDb, as averaged across more than 1,800 reviews of Season 1.
