Mrs. Gable stood in front of her second-grade classroom on a crisp Tuesday morning, her hands resting gently on the wooden podium.

“Class,” she announced with a warm smile, “for Friday’s Show-and-Tell, we’re doing something special. I want each of you to bring in what you love most in the entire world.”

The room erupted into excited whispers. Seven-year-old Leo sat in the third row, his small fingers fidgeting with the frayed cuff of his oversized hand-me-down sweater.

Beside him, Ethan bragged about bringing his brand-new Nintendo Switch. Across the aisle, Chloe announced she would bring her pedigree golden retriever puppy.

Leo stayed quiet, staring out the window at the autumn leaves dancing in the wind.

When the bell rang, Leo ran all the way home to the tiny two-bedroom apartment at the end of Maple Street.

Inside, the living room was quiet save for the soft hum of the oxygen concentrator. His single mother worked double shifts at the local diner, leaving Leo to be the man of the house every afternoon.

“Leo?” a tiny, raspy voice called from the sofa.

Leo took the paper like it was a priceless masterpiece. Looking around their humble living room, he realized he didn’t own a shiny game console or a purebred pet. But as he looked at Maya’s bright, resilient eyes, he knew exactly what he was going to bring.

2. Friday Morning in Class

Friday arrived with a chilly breeze. The children lined up their prized possessions on the large table at the front of the classroom.

Leo looked down at his sister, whose small face beamed with pride.

“Toys break,” Leo continued, his eyes glistening with tears. “Game consoles get old. But Maya is my best friend, and she’s the most important thing in my life.”

She turned to the class. “Children, what Leo brought today isn’t something you can buy in a store. It’s the most valuable thing in the world.”

Slowly, Chloe started clapping. Then Ethan joined in, followed by the rest of the class until the entire room resonated with a warm applause.

Maya giggled, hiding her face in Leo’s jacket. Leo smiled, holding her hand a little tighter—knowing that while he didn’t have much, he was the richest boy in the world.
