Tom Cruise took Kate Middleton’s hand again – gentlemanly charm, or should stars keep a royal distance?
At the world premiere of Digger in Leicester Square on Tuesday evening (22 September 2026), Tom Cruise once more offered his hand to the Princess of Wales as they descended the stairs into the cinema — exactly as he had done at the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in 2022. When Kate’s clutch bag got in the way, she quietly switched it to her other hand so he could take hers. The Hollywood star later told reporters of the royal couple: “I just love them. They are lovely people and I have great respect for them.”
The gesture immediately divided opinion. Some praised Cruise as the ultimate old-school gentleman. Others argued he had stepped too close and breached royal protocol.
According to long-standing etiquette, members of the public (and even celebrities) should not touch a member of the Royal Family unless the royal initiates contact first. Cruise not only held Kate’s hand while guiding her down the steps but also greeted her with kisses on both cheeks — more familiar than the usual bow or handshake. Online comments ranged from “Tom should keep his hands to himself” to “He’s just being a gentleman, and Kate accepted it gracefully.”
In reality, Cruise and the Waleses share a warm, established friendship. They previously appeared together at the Top Gun: Maverick premiere, and Cruise met the late Princess Diana and attended her funeral in 1997. Kate wore a flowing purple Jenny Packham gown with a train that could easily catch underfoot, plus meaningful jewellery: Diana’s pearl-drop earrings and the Queen Mother’s amethyst sautoir necklace. Offering a steadying hand in that moment was both practical and courteous.
Kate’s own response is telling. By calmly transferring her clutch, she actively facilitated the gesture rather than declining it. Had she felt uncomfortable, she could have simply kept her hand free. Her ease suggests mutual comfort rather than any breach of boundaries.
In today’s world the line between royalty and celebrity has softened. William and Kate frequently mingle with Hollywood stars at charity events (this premiere supported the Film and TV Charity). Maintaining rigid distance can make the monarchy seem remote, while a touch of traditional chivalry helps humanise them.
At 64, Cruise still embodies classic Hollywood manners. He not only assisted Kate but also complimented William’s “great jacket.” These small moments reflect genuine respect and long-standing acquaintance more than any disregard for protocol.
So where does that leave us? The episode sits comfortably between old-fashioned gallantry and the relaxed familiarity that comes with a real relationship. Stars need not keep an absolute distance from royals, provided they remain sensitive to the boundaries the royals themselves set. Kate accepted Cruise’s hand without hesitation — and that, more than any rule book, is the clearest answer.
