Queen Camilla has long continued Queen Elizabeth II’s love of equestrianism, and on that afternoon at York Racecourse, she once again commemorated her late mother-in-law with a special piece of jewelry.
The diamond and sapphire butterfly brooch that Queen Camilla wore on August 19th is known to have been a gift to Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. This exquisite piece of jewelry has been chosen by Camilla for many important occasions, such as when she welcomed Emperor Naruhito during his state visit in 2024. When she chose this brooch for her 79th birthday portrait earlier this year, the media also revealed that it was a gift Queen Elizabeth II received in Birmingham in 1977.
On August 19th, the brooch wasn’t immediately noticeable because Camilla wore a raincoat over her outfit and used an umbrella to protect herself from the unfavorable weather upon arrival. Besides the butterfly brooch, she also wore another brooch associated with her role as patron of the Jockey Club, a position previously held by Queen Elizabeth II, and which Camilla and King Charles III officially assumed jointly in 2024.
Queen Camilla’s appearance on August 19th came shortly after a charity video was released, featuring her reflections on the period following King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis. In the recorded interview for the charity Maggie’s, the Queen revealed that she found it incredibly difficult to keep the information private, knowing it herself but not the public. She recalled a visit to a Maggie’s center in January 2024, just days before the official announcement of the King’s illness, and said that she simply wanted to tell the truth but couldn’t.
Camilla was announced as the patron of York Racecourse from 2024, and she also visited the racecourse last August. On August 19th , she attended the opening day of the Ebor Festival, where she was scheduled to meet with those whom Buckingham Palace calls the racecourse’s unsung heroes, including a volunteer from St. John Ambulance who has been with the organization for the past 50 years. She was also expected to meet with representatives of local charities supported by the racecourse, along with prominent members of the Yorkshire equestrian community. As part of the event, Queen Camilla will also present the trophy to the owner of the winning horse in the main race, the Juddmonte International Stakes.
It’s clear that, even for just an afternoon at the racetrack, Queen Camilla’s image subtly alludes to the legacy left by Queen Elizabeth II, from her love of horse racing to her distinctive royal jewelry. The combination of her official role and such personal details always garners special attention whenever she makes an appearance.
