Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend has explained why she never married the Duke as she sheds light on how their relationship ended. Chelsy Davy pulled the plug on her relationship with Prince Harry, ruling that royalty was not for her. Chelsy, 40, dated Prince Harry for around seven years before they broke up for good in 2011. The jewellery designer who is now a married mother-of-three has admitted that despite the long and seemingly serious nature of her relationship with Harry, she spent her twenties and thirties “only committed to having fun”.
“Looking back… commitment wasn’t exactly my strong suit,” Chelsy wrote on her Aya jewellery website this week. “I wanted the next trip, the next adventure, the next group of people I hadn’t met yet. I lived in Istanbul. I travelled around South America. I went to Bali, the Amazon, Moscow.” She continues: “I wasn’t remotely interested in staying in one place, following a conventional career path or committing to anything that might interfere with whatever sounded most exciting.”
In Harry’s memoir, Spare, the prince said that while he was enamoured by Chelsy’s ways, he worried that his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth, might feel differently. He penned: “She wore short skirts and high boots, danced with abandon, drank as much tequila as I did, and I cherished all those things about her… but I couldn’t help worrying how Granny might feel about them. Or the British public. And the last thing I wanted was for Chels to change to accommodate them.”
The prince added: “Unlike so many people I knew, she seemed wholly unconcerned with appearances, with propriety, with royalty. Unlike so many girls I met, she wasn’t visibly fitting herself for a crown the moment she shook my hand. She seemed immune to that common affliction sometimes called throne syndrome.”
In lockdown in 2020, Chelsy met her husband Sam Cutmore-Scott and realised that she wanted to settle down, but only “specifically with him,” reports The Mirror. Chelsy and Harry remained on friendly terms after their break up and she even attended Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle.
