Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were the subject of Saturday Night Live UK’s mockery following the couple’s high-profile move back to the United Kingdom.

In the season 2 premiere of the Sky series — a spinoff of the long-running American comedy show — the cast took shots at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as well as King Charles and Queen Camilla, during the episode’s opening sketch.

The Saturday, Sept. 12, episode kicked off with Charles and Camilla, portrayed by SNL UK cast members Larry Dean and Emma Sidi, respectively, enjoying downtime in a cozy room at Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

“Oh, Camilla, nothing like a quiet Saturday in Balmoral. Clean Scottish air, dirty Scottish people … bliss,” the King said, drawing laughs from the studio audience, as Camilla agreed, “I do so love our weekends away. No responsibilities — just like every other day.”

Harry and Meghan, respectively portrayed by Jack Shep and Ayoade Bamgboye, then entered. “Daddy, I’m home,” the Duke of Sussex said as the pair walked into the room.

The sketch then proceeded to poke fun at Meghan’s cooking, which she highlighted in her Netflix lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, by having the Duchess of Sussex bring Camilla an ice tray as a “gift.”

“It’s ice. I made it myself. I can give you the recipe. I’m kind of a wiz in the kitchen,” Meghan earnestly told Camilla, as Harry chimed in to rib his wife: “It’s true. She hires the best cooks.”

The fake Harry and Meghan were extremely affectionate toward each other in the sketch, causing discomfort for King Charles, who then questioned why they moved back across the pond.

“Don’t tell me you spent all your Netflix money already,” King Charles questioned the pair, prompting a frustrated Harry to reply whinily, “Daddy, it was $60 million! How long was it meant to last?”

Harry also stated during the sketch, “Daddy, just because I don’t want to be a royal doesn’t mean I want to be a regular guy,” a jab seemingly referring to the new guidance issued by King Charles this week describing the couple’s position as “akin to private citizens.”

On Sept. 7, the monarch issued a letter via the Lord Chamberlain, Lord Benyon, clarifying the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s status as non-working royals amid their recent return to the U.K.

The King’s letter stated that Harry and Meghan are “no longer working Members of The Royal Family” and said their position, including the “personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish,” would continue to be respected.

“In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests,” the letter said of the couple, who moved back to England with their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, in August.

Sources close to Harry and Meghan subsequently pushed back on the King’s new guidance, pointing to the reality that the pair — who have lived in California since 2020, after stepping back from their royal roles — remain highly recognizable public figures — a distinction that also carries implications for their privacy and security, particularly following their return to Britain.

Those close to the couple also argued that if Harry and Meghan were private individuals, the Lord Chamberlain would not have needed to issue a letter of formal guidance.

“They are public figures. Members of the public know who they are,” an insider close to the couple said. “The idea that they can live a normal, ‘private’ life is sadly not realistic.”

SNL UK debuted March 21, with SNL legend Tina Fey as its first-ever host. Jeff Goldblum hosted the first episode of season 2 on Sept. 12, and actor-comedian Jamie Demetriou and Chicken Shop Date‘s Amelia Dimoldenberg are set to host upcoming episodes.
