King Charles and Queen Camilla’s planned visit to the United States is now in flux following the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this weekend.

The King, 77, and the Queen, 78, were set to travel to Washington, D.C., on Monday, April 27, kicking off a four-day visit tied to the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence from the United Kingdom, as well as a partnership of “shared prosperity, security and history,” according to the U.K. foreign office.

But after gunfire left one Secret Service agent injured during the annual political event on Saturday, April 25, a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace tells PEOPLE on Sunday, April 26, “His Majesty is being kept fully informed of developments and is greatly relieved to hear that the President, First Lady and all guests have been unharmed.”

“A number of discussions will be taking place throughout the day to discuss with U.S. colleagues and our respective teams to what degree the events of Saturday evening may or may not impact on the operational planning for the Visit,” the spokesperson continues.

PEOPLE understands that Charles and Camilla reached out privately to Donald Trump and Melania Trump following the shooting incident.

Live footage from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner showed Secret Service agents entering the ballroom and quickly escorting Trump, 79, out of the room as he was sitting onstage shortly after the start of the event. Other prominent figures onstage, including Melania, 56, vice president JD Vance and press secretary Karoline Leavitt, were also seen on camera being removed from the ballroom.

Law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation have since identified Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, Calif., as the armed man who was taken into custody, according to Reuters, The New York Times and CNN. Allen, 31, will face at least two counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on federal officers, according to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro. (A motive for the shooting is not immediately clear.)

“Quite an evening in D.C.,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post after the shooting incident. “Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely.” In a follow-up post on Truth Social, Trump added: “The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition.”

During a subsequent press conference, Interim Washington, D.C., police chief Jeffery Carroll said the suspect had been staying at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., which hosts the event. Mayor Muriel Bowser and several law enforcement officials said they believe the suspect acted alone.

Charles and Camilla’s still-to-be-decided visit to the U.S. would see them taking part in a private tea, a garden party and a ceremonial military review on their first day.

The King would then follow in his mother’s footsteps, becoming just the second-ever British monarch to deliver an address to a joint meeting of Congress. The late Queen Elizabeth delivered a speech at the Capitol in 1991, the third of four official state visits to the U.S. she made over the course of her reign.

Charles and Camilla would also attend a state dinner at the White House, visit New York City for a series of engagements, including a visit to One World Trade Center and a reception for The King’s Trust, and later travel to Virginia to meet local residents and community organizations and observe performances by Appalachian cultural groups, as well as attend a “block party” in a national park to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.

The visit would take place less than a year after the Trumps made their own visit to the U.K., where they were celebrated with a lavish state banquet.

Trump has recently butted heads with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer over immigration, the war in Iran and Peter Mandelson, the short-lived British ambassador to the U.S.
