Exclusive: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’

The heartwarming journey of Tova Sullivan and her unlikely companion, Marcellus the giant Pacific octopus, has transitioned from the pages of Shelby Van Pelt’s beloved debut novel to the silver screen. In this exclusive deep dive, we explore how the Netflix adaptation brought this “remarkably bright” world to life.

Bringing Marcellus to Life: From Sea to Screen

The most significant challenge for Director Olivia Newman and her team was portraying Marcellus. While the production initially hoped to use a real octopus, they quickly learned that octopuses are far too independent to follow “blocking.”

Instead, the team turned to cutting-edge VFX. The digital Marcellus was modeled after a real giant Pacific octopus named Agnetha at the Vancouver Aquarium. The VFX crew spent months filming Agnetha from every angle—even filming her feeding—to ensure Marcellus’s movements and behaviors felt authentic. Alfred Molina (fittingly known to many as “Dr. Octopus”) provides the perfect world-weary yet wise voice for the character.

Finding Sowell Bay

The picturesque, cozy coastal town of Sowell Bay was found in Deep Cove, British Columbia, just north of Vancouver. From Tova’s charming house to the “main drag” of the town, the location captured the specific Pacific Northwest atmosphere Van Pelt envisioned. The underwater sequences were supplemented by licensed footage from renowned diver John Roney, adding an otherworldly beauty to the marine environment.

Casting a Legend

For Shelby Van Pelt, seeing Sally Field step into the role of Tova Sullivan was a full-circle moment. Van Pelt has noted that Field perfectly captures the spirit of her own grandmother, who served as the inspiration for the character. Alongside Field, Lewis Pullman plays the “rumpled and self-deprecating” Cameron, and the “Knitwits”—Tova’s knitting circle—are played by a powerhouse cast including Joan Chen and Kathy Baker.

At its core, Remarkably Bright Creatures remains a story about grief, community, and the “bright spots” in human nature.
