Preston was subjected to months of horrific physical, sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of the secondary school teacher, who was trusted to take care of him. Varley and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, were approved for adoption by Adoption Now on January 6, 2023. On April 1, Preston spent his first night at the couple’s home in Staining Road, Blackpool, and was formally placed under their care. Just six days later, on April 6, Varley texted his sister, a baby sleep trainer, saying: “He’s dead meat today. I didn’t sleep last night after 11.30. Up every one and a half hours.”

Preston was routinely ill-treated, had indecent images and videos taken of him, and was sexually abused and physically assaulted, suffering 40 traumatic injuries.

On July 10 July 10, just four days after Preston had been admitted to Blackpool Victoria Hospital for a third time, after earlier visits in May and June Varley ‘jokingly’ told his partner, “your son’s in hospital. I strangled him”.

Varley, a minute later sent a second text to his boyfriend, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, saying: “Jokes. Just give me a call when done.”

On July 27 2023 the former head of year rushed Preston into hospital for the final time, claiming he had accidentally drowned in the bath. Lying to medical staff, Varley claimed he left the child in the bath for two or three minutes and returned to find him submerged.

However, there was no evidence he had swallowed water, he had a nappy in place and was dry. One senior doctor said Varley gave a “performance” of a grieving parent that was unlike any she had ever seen before.
