  • The Duke of Sussex is back in his home country for a series of charity events, including the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham

Prince Harry is back in the U.K., once again without Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

PEOPLE confirms that the Duke of Sussex, 41, arrived back in his home country on Monday, July 6, ahead of a week of appearances linked to some of his longstanding charities, including the one-year countdown festivities to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.

Harry’s arrival in the U.K. comes after he was vacationing in Europe with his wife and children.

After initially announcing that the couple would bring their two kids — Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5 — back to the U.K. for their first visit since 2022, PEOPLE learned on July 4 that Meghan, 44, and the children would not accompany Harry to London. No decision has yet been made on whether the family will join Harry for other parts of his visit outside the capital city.

The family’s plans for the U.K. trip have been complicated by ongoing questions surrounding security. Prince Harry and Meghan lost their automatic police protection in the U.K. after stepping back as working members of the royal family in 2020 and relocating to California. The Duke of Sussex has been campaigning to reinstate his security since.

PEOPLE understands that a long-awaited review of Harry’s security by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) is still ongoing.

Although King Charles offered the family accommodations on a royal estate, the security arrangements would not extend beyond the property. In a statement shared with PEOPLE on June 29, a spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex said, “The issue is whether appropriate and proportionate protective security is being provided throughout the entirety of the visit.”

At the time, the spokesperson said Prince Harry was continuing to “explore every available option to enable the visit to proceed safely and to give his children the opportunity to enjoy the U.K.”

Last year, Prince Harry told the BBC he “can’t see a world” in which he would bring his family back to his home country without the police protection he has long sought to have restored.

“The things that they’re going to miss is, well, everything,” he added of his children. “I miss the U.K., I miss parts of the U.K., of course I do. I think that it’s really quite sad that I won’t be able to show my children my homeland.”

Archie was born in the U.K. in May 2019, and his parents introduced him to the world with a photo call at Windsor Castle just days later. Archie also joined his parents at a polo match later that summer, and he joined them on a royal tour of South Africa in September 2019, where he was photographed meeting Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their daughter — named Lilibet after Queen Elizabeth’s childhood nickname and known as “Lili — in 2021 after relocating to California. She has visited her father’s homeland only once so far — in 2022 when the family returned to the U.K. for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. During that trip, Prince Harry and Meghan celebrated their daughter’s first birthday with a backyard party at their former U.K. residence in Windsor, Frogmore Cottage, and released an official photo of Lili from the event.
