HOUSTON RESTAURANT COMMUNITY SHOCKED AFTER WELL-KNOWN COUPLE AND THEIR CHILDREN FOUND DEAD IN APPARENT MURDER-SUICIDE

The Houston restaurant community is mourning an unimaginable tragedy after prominent restaurateurs Matthew Mitchell and Thy Mitchell were identified as the couple involved in an apparent murder-suicide that claimed the lives of their entire family.

The couple, known as the owners of the popular Houston restaurants Travelers Table and Travelers Cart, were found dead alongside their two young children inside their River Oaks home Monday evening, according to Houston police.

Authorities said officers responded to the residence on Kingston Street near Avalon Place around 5:30 p.m. after receiving a welfare check request. Concern reportedly grew after the family’s babysitter and one of Thy Mitchell’s sisters had not heard from or seen the family since Sunday night.

When officers entered the home, they discovered four bodies inside.

Investigators later confirmed the victims included a 39-year-old woman, identified as Thy Mitchell, her two children ages 8 and 4, and her husband Matthew Mitchell, 52. Police stated that evidence at the scene indicates Matthew fatally shot his wife and children before turning the gun on himself.

Officials are still working to establish a full timeline of events and determine exactly when the family was last seen alive.

The news sent shockwaves through Houston’s hospitality industry, where the Mitchells had built a strong reputation through their globally inspired restaurants. Employees at both Travelers Table and Travelers Cart confirmed the deaths following the release of information by authorities.

According to information published on the Travelers Table website, Matthew Mitchell studied at Emory University and later spent time in France, Italy, and England before working as a journalist in cities including London, Paris, and New York. After returning to Texas, he spent more than a decade in the pharmaceutical industry before eventually opening his first restaurant.

Thy Mitchell, who grew up in Houston, was deeply connected to the restaurant world from an early age. Her biography stated that she spent weekends helping at her family’s Vietnamese restaurant while growing up before later earning degrees from the University of Houston and Penn State University.

Friends and neighbors described the tragedy as deeply disturbing and difficult to comprehend.

One nearby resident said the family had not lived in the neighborhood for very long, but they were often seen together around the area.

“It’s very sad,” the neighbor said. “We don’t know all the details yet, but anytime something like this happens, it’s heartbreaking.”
