Gold Dancer Breaks Back During Race, Wins—Then Dies Moments Later [VIDEOS]

After winning a big race on Saturday, a horse was put down at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool, United Kingdom. Gold Dancer won the Mildmay Novices’ Chase on day two of the Grand National Meeting at Aintree.
He fell at the final hurdle, but recovered to limp over the line to victory. Paul Townend pushed him to the finish line, but things went south after that. Townend dismounted, and the vets rushed to check the horse, but it was too late.
Gold Dancer claimed the win, but lost his life. The prize for winning the race was £67,524 (about $90,000).
Owners Issue Statement After Gold Dancer’s Tragic Death
The horse, trained by Willie Mullins, was owned by Gigginstown. The owners issued a statement on the situation, explaining what happened.
“He’s been put down. He broke his back. It’s terribly sad for the horse,” Eddie O’Leary said. “What could Paul Townend do? He felt fine, it was just when he pulled up that something was wrong.”
