There’s one question on the minds of fans of The Pitt, and Noah Wyle knows it.

Baby Jane Doe was a scene-stealer in season 2 of the HBO Max series, and Wyle, who leads the Pittsburgh emergency department as Dr. Robby, closed out the season with the infant.

After several candid conversations with his colleagues about his mental health and suicidal thoughts, Dr. Robby’s final scene — and the final scene of the season — was him holding the baby, who was abandoned in the bathroom at the start of the shift.

“I got abandoned too when I was 8. But I got through all of that and so will you,” he says in the scene. “I got a good feeling you’re going to be just fine. Everything’s going to be just fine. You’ve got so many wonderful things to see and so many people to love ahead of you.”

The season ended without a clear answer on Baby Jane Doe’s fate — or on whether Robby is taking his cross-country motorcycle trip — but Wyle is weighing in. “I think we’ve got to bring her back,” he tells PEOPLE about Baby Jane Doe.

“At least in season 20, as a new nurse,” Wyle, 54, jokes on the red carpet at the Time 100 Gala in New York City on Thursday, April 23.

He says it’s been “extremely gratifying” to see fans’ response to the season 2 finale, which aired on April 16, and to know that they “landed the plane.”

“Shaky, shaky coming into that runway, but we got it on the ground,” he says. “[It’s] extremely gratifying to hear that people really found the journey of a man deciding not to go on a journey enough of a season of television to be compelling.”

Looking ahead to season 3, which starts filming in June, Wyle told PEOPLE that the creative team behind the series is “sort of hard-pressed to try and find a passage of time that will keep our ensemble together as much as possible because it’s such a revolving front door.”

“You don’t want to cast it so far in the future that we’d lose more characters than we want to,” he said of the timeline for season 3.

At the same time, they want to “give a little bit of difference of season, because that sometimes gives you more variety of cases.” He explained: “In the wintertime, you get more car accidents, more black ice, more boilers exploding and that kind of stuff. Different wardrobe, different vibe.”

The plan for season 3 is for it to take place in “late fall,” he said.
