Noah Wyle has answers about Dr. Robby’s future on The Pitt.

The medical drama’s season 2 finale ended on a cliffhanger Thursday, April 16, with Wyle’s character pondering a three-month sabbatical and a motorcycle ride across the country.

Wyle, 54, was asked during a 2026 PaleyFest panel held Sunday, April 12, whether Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch was really going on the trip — and if he planned on coming back.

“Yes on both,” Wyle revealed to moderator Joanna Robinson during the Los Angeles event.

In the episode, the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center employee marked the end of his Fourth of July shift as he kept quiet about a return. At the same time, his colleagues continued to encourage him to seek help for his mental health. The finale wraps with him crying while holding Baby Jane Doe, leaving fans wondering what really went down with Robby after the shift came to a close.

Series creator R. Scott Gemmill told Variety of the ending scene that the child “represents someone who’s a little bit lost and needs help, not unlike Robby.”

“Here he is, there to comfort this little lost soul, which I think in some ways Robby sees himself in, and is able to say things to the baby that he wouldn’t say to anyone else because he knows it’s a safe environment and it’s not going to go anywhere,” he said. “And anytime I can put a baby in Noah Wyle’s arms, it’s a win.”

As Gemmill put it, Robby may be both “afraid to go on his trip” and “afraid to stay.”

“He knows staying is not good for him, but he doesn’t have anything else in his life. This is a turning point for him,” Gemmill said. “Should I stay or should I go now? If I stay, there will be trouble. If I go, it could be double.”

He adds, “That’s where he’s at, and he ultimately has to make a decision, and that’s what season 3 will be about: What was that decision and how is it going to affect him moving forward?”

When asked about Robby’s future during an interview with Parade, Gemmill revealed that the character will ultimately “have gone on his trip” and added of Wyle in season 3, “I wouldn’t want to do the show without him.”

“That’s just a personal honor, because we’re friends,” he said. “I think Noah’s fundamental to the show, and I wouldn’t want to do the show without him.”

HBO Max’s Emmy-winning medical drama was renewed for a third season, with the news announced just a day before the season 2 premiere in January. Wyle told Variety that season 3 will take place in the fall, “to get into a slightly different mode of cases that come with a change in weather.”

He told USA Today that the upcoming “explosive” season “will be pre-Thanksgiving, moving into colder weather. The holidays are approaching. The weather’s changing. People are turning on their heaters for the first time.”
