It’s quickly discovered that Javadi is the daughter of the hospital’s own Dr. Eileen Shamsi, a surgical attending who’s well-renowned in the medical community. However, Javadi doesn’t necessarily embrace this connection when it’s revealed, and instead tries to avoid having others learn about the relationship. Of course, The Pitt‘s Dr. Santos ends up trying to be friendly to Javadi after learning about their connection, but Javadi’s reason for trying to hide being known as Dr. Shamsi’s daughter has a deeper reason as she begins her medical career.

Javadi Doesn’t Want To Be Accused Of Getting Her Position Via Nepotism

The biggest reason why Javadi doesn’t want the other doctors and nurses in The Pitt to know the truth about her family is that she wants to avoid the expectations that come with being Shamsi’s daughter. With Javadi being Shamsi’s daughter, the pressure and expectations would be higher for her to be more knowledgeable, experienced, and accustomed to the medical world. The fact that Javadi fainted shortly after her shift began in The Pitt’s series premiere would be even more surprising due to her family’s profession, as others might expect her to be used to seeing images of brutal injuries.

Additionally, Javadi doesn’t want her colleagues to think she got special treatment from her mother to get the position at the Pitt. If everyone knows that Dr. Shamsi is her mother, they might look down upon her and think that nepotism is the only reason she’s there, especially considering how young she is. To make up for these insecurities, Javadi feels like she has to defend herself and explain how hard she had to work on her studies and ambitions in order to get to the position she has at The Pitt’s emergency department.

Javadi wants to be treated like Whitaker or any other medical student in The Pitt, and that’s difficult when everyone knows that one of the top doctors in the hospital is your mother. The others may try to watch what they say, feel like they have to be more strict about following every protocol, and feel less inclined to goof off around Javadi if they think that word might reach an attending surgeon. Not to mention, ambitious doctors like Santos might try to use Javadi’s connection to Shamsi for their own benefit.

Javadi Is Already Uncomfortable With Her Mother’s High Expectations & Involvement In Her Career

Javadi Is More Nervous & Uneasy When Dr. Shamsi Is Around

In addition to having to worry about how her treatment may change based on others knowing Dr. Shamsi is her mother, Javadi has to deal with the strain that comes with facing her family’s high expectations both at home and at her job. Even while being in the same profession, Javadi likely felt more relief and independence before working at the same hospital as her mother. She seems to feel that her mother is hovering over her even more and watching her every move in more detail now that they’re working just a few floors apart.

Whenever Shamsi comes down to The Pitt’s emergency department, we can sense Javadi’s unease. We see Shamsi reprimand her when she forgets something they had seemingly studied at home, and it’s clear that Shamsi overseeing her makes Javadi more nervous and insecure. Feeling that tension and insecurity at work is even worse for an emergency department doctor, as Javadi has to constantly be in the right, self-assured headspace when tasked with making quick decisions, precise and careful treatment methods, and thorough analyses of patients.

It’s clear that Javadi loves her mother and her family, but she also has a massive amount of pressure on her that makes her job more difficult. It’s implied that her family has been preparing her to become a doctor since the time she could hold a fake scalpel. And not just a doctor, at that, but an even more accomplished doctor than Shamsi herself. Being a doctor is really all that Javadi has ever known, and it’s harder to make that passion her own when she’s working in the same hospital as her mother.

Javadi is more on edge than she would be otherwise, even socially with other staff, which is further emphasized in The Pitt season 1’s ending when she asks the others at the park not to tell her mother that she drank a beer. When Javadi returns in The Pitt season 2, she’ll hopefully be more sure of herself with a reputation distinct from her connection to her mother, especially since she’ll have another nine or ten months’ worth of experience in the emergency department under her belt by then.

Javadi’s Father Also Works At The Hospital

One of the greatest aspects of The Pitt’s exploration of its doctors and nurses is that the show is more subtle in revealing their backstories and personal lives. However, there were a few notable times when the doctors’ family and work lives collided, such as Dr. McKay’s father, son, and ex coming to the hospital, Robby’s ex-stepson and ex-girlfriend showing up after Pitt Fest, and, of course, Shamsi having to come down to the Pitt and work alongside her daughter.

While the other family members arrived as patients or relatives of patients, Shamsi and Javadi both working at the hospital means there will likely be more scenes between the two in The Pitt season 2. As such, season 2 can expand on their dynamic by revealing more about why Shamsi and Javadi’s father were so invested in raising Javadi to be a doctor from such a young age. Since Javadi’s father is also a medical professional, their history in the field gives important context to how Javadi approaches the field and the deeper meaning of her career accomplishments.

On that point, it’s revealed that Javadi’s father also works in the hospital with his wife and daughter as an endocrinologist. Since he wasn’t featured in season 1, Javadi’s father could be among The Pitt season 2’s new characters, expanding on their familial dynamics as the chaos of the Fourth of July weekend erupts in the emergency department. We’ve only seen how Javadi’s relationship with her renowned mother affects her at work, so it would be fascinating to see how that may differ with her father in The Pitt season 2.
