It has been some time since we have been treated to watching Jannik Sinner play tennis, with the world number one’s knee injury continuing to halt his comeback hopes.
As such, the Italian has missed the US Open and more recently withdrawn from the China Open as well.
The last time we saw him play was the Wimbledon final, some two and a half months ago.
With long-term injuries now suffered by both Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, it’s clear that the ATP Tour has a major problem that needs fixing sooner rather than later.
Fortunately, with the Spaniard having made his comeback in the past few weeks, we now have news that suggests Sinner will not be far behind.
Promising Jannik Sinner injury update emerges
As reported by Sky Sports Italy, there is increasing confidence that the Shanghai Masters will represent the site of his return.
The penultimate Masters 1000 event of the season, which gets underway just next week, will represent a quick turnaround for the 24-year-old, who is still currently training in Monte Carlo.
That being said, this report also states that the intensity of said training has increased massively, and optimism surrounding his participation is only growing.
After their final on-court tests around his knee, a decision will be made and likely shared in the coming days.
This comes after Nick Kyrgios offered his honest opinion about Sinner’s tennis, having been one of his more vocal critics after his ban from the sport last year.
Jannik Sinner’s last opportunity for ranking point boost at Shanghai Masters
There has been plenty of talk lately regarding Alexander Zverev’s quest for the world number one spot, as he seeks to dethrone Sinner.
After all, over the past few months, it’s fair to say that the German has capitalised on the absence of the world’s best players, moving himself to within 1,400 ranking points of the top.

And, with Sinner due to defend big points at the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals, the Shanghai Masters, should he play, will be his final chance to enjoy a much-needed boost.
This is due to his shock early exit last year, when he was beaten by Tallon Griekspoor, having retired whilst trailing in the third set.
